In my Letter from the President message which I sent earlier this year, I stated that one of CCYB’s goals was to improve the competitiveness of our summer tournament teams.    Baystate is a competitive summer baseball league comprised of players from each town playing against each other in a winner takes all, extended tournament.  The schedule runs from the beginning of July through mid-August, depending on each team’s success.  Games are played on 2 week nights and on Saturday and Sunday, which results in 4 games per week.  CCYB typically fields one team within the 10 year old, 11 year old and 12 year old age groups.   Although coaches try to accommodate all players, due to the competitive nature of the league all kids do not receive the same amount of playing time.  The amount of playing time each boy receives is solely at the discretion of the coaches.

Few towns field more than one team per age group in the Baystate league.  In the past CCYB has fielded two teams in certain age groups.  Unfortunately the experience was not good as we diluted the talent of both teams making them noncompetitive and making the summer experience not fun for kids and parents.

All potential Baystate players will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

1)  Spring coach recommendations
2)  Invitational try-out
3)  Observation from spring games and/or previous summer season (when applicable)
4)  All-Star game/try-out performance

In general, we respect the opinions of our coaches and ask them to each recommend 20 – 40% of their players based on their observations in the spring.  Each family is then contacted asking their sons to come to a try-out.  As part of this we make it clear the level of commitment the program takes and that boys do not receive an equal amount of playing time.  From the boys that choose to tryout a team is selected.

Starting this year CCYB will adhere to solely to the Baystate eligibility rules for players.  Rules for the Baystate league, including rules for eligibility can be found at www.baystatebaseball.com.

In the end we are looking to field a competitive team with boys that are good ballplayers, are competitive, who are coachable, who will make good teammates and who can firmly commit to the season.

Cal Ripken Tournaments
As I also mentioned in my letter, CCYB is having greater involvement in the local Cal Ripken chapter.  This includes fielding teams in local Cal Ripken tournaments when possible.  For a player to be eligible to participate on a Cal Ripken tournament team they must be a registered player and play within the town’s spring league.  Starting in 2011 CCYB intends to field the same team for both Baystate and Cal Ripken tournaments.  This year Cal Ripken tournaments start the week of June 28.  We are still in the process of determining at which age levels we will field teams as the logistics for Cal Ripken tournaments are still a bit in flux.

Out of Town Roster Spots
Our summer teams are open to boys who live/go to school in Concord/Carlisle only.   We received questions from Bay State and Lou Tompkins coaches about adding a player or two from other town that do not have Bay State programs.   We checked with the Bay State president and received the following reply:

You'd have to send a written appeal to me and I'd get the opinion of all our board members.  The first question we'd ask is, "Doesn't Concord have enough players?"  A second question might be, "Will a Concord kid NOT make the team as a result?"  Thirdly, "Why doesn't Harvard have a team?"

Our residency requirements rule is in our rule book for a good reason and that's to prevent teams from stocking up with talent from other towns.  What you're asking us to do is set a dangerous precedent.  But, give it your best shot...one never knows what my board members would say to a convincing appeal.

The CCYB Executive Committe strongly prefers to field teams with Concord Carlisle boys.  Even if this was not our position, it does not appear that we have a compelling, precedent-making case to add boys from other towns.

Thank you.
