posted 09/03/2010 Many thanks to CCYB, CCYS and member families who donated baseball, and soccer equipment and uniforms to Concord's sister city, San Marcos Nicaragua
This August, twelve CCHS students and three parents traveled to San Marcos for eight days. During the visit, our group played baseball and soccer games with local kids, engaged in public service projects and enjoyed building relationships with the local communities. Thanks to the generous contributions, and an ample free baggage allowance, we were able to bring over 1,200 pounds of much appreciated sports gear and clothing to San Marcos.
We were received with the warmth, friendship, and outstretched arms befitting a sister city relationship. The games drew crowds of attentive spectators who enjoyed the good natured competition and the chance for cross country dialogue. We were impressed by the skill, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship of the Nicaraguan players. Our team, however, was sometimes challenged by field conditions that could produce unusual bounces, occasional livestock in the outfield and new rules such as balls hit onto church property are a ground rule double.

The Fatima Team in San Marcos
When not playing sports, our group had the chance to perform community service projects at a local school, an orphanage, and areas within the town of San Marcos. We were able to visit El Uval, a community of 800 people which, thanks to the fund raising efforts of Concord citizens, will soon have a new well providing its first ever source of safe fresh water. We met with the Mayor of San Marcos and other local officials who expressed appreciation for Concord's assistance and mentioned areas of need and ideas for future projects. We were also able to experience the lush countryside, beautiful beaches, an active volcano, vibrant markets, as well as connect with local people.

The trip was a wonderful and memorable experience for all involved. We left Nicaragua with new friends, improved Spanish, a greater understanding of the human spirit and a deeper relationship between our cities. We also felt our efforts and the donations we brought with us will help make a lasting difference. Many thanks to all who helped make this possible.
